VersionTracker.com is indispensable for, personally.. With most software phoning for updates though, it's a bit overkill for VTP, so you're right on that one.

The "member" "freebies" on .Mac are the toaster over give away of the intarweb land. Lame x 3

.Mac used to (still does?) have a pretty nice discount on VersionTracker Pro/MacFixIt Pro. I sprung for it one year; didn't use the extras nearly enough to justify it, and even the paid version of MacFixIt is way too ponderous and difficult to search to have much worth. I do use VersionTracker Plus' features pretty heavily, so I would have paid for it anyway.

But .Mac did offer up a few nice discounts on shareware over the years that I put to good use. (And no, Virex doesn't count!) Nothing that would make you pay full price for the service, but enough to ease the pain noticeably.

Thank you, Apple, for weeding out the companies whose business model depends on selling my information to junk-mailers.

This is the kind of 'crazy-Steve-Jobs-control' I can live with.

They are legally not allowed to sell your personal data in Europe without your permission. I realise this doesn't help you if you live in the USA but the whole 'selling my data' issue simply isn't a big deal for subscriptions if you live in the EU.

I got a weird bug. Sometimes my albums in the photos app go right to the top of the screen and show underneath the 'menubar' at the top so I can tap on it and open the first album in the list. If I pull it back down on the rubberband effect it still goes to the top of the screen?! I have to restart my phone for it to reset and its still hit and miss whether it works.

Can confirm that. Have the bug too.

You also get a lot of people on here looking at the US Apple Store and seeing the iPhone 4 at $200 then checking their own store and seeing it priced around 500 Pounds or Euros.

They don't understand that the US price doesn't include sales tax and requires signing up for an expensive 2 year contract but their own price includes tax and is for a factory unlocked, contract-free phone.

my iP4 here in my country costed me a whole $0.33 to get on a 2 year contract.
off contract they are around 25% more than US.

You will only loose your rollover minutes if you switch plan types. Example from Family Talk to a single line plan. Changing minutes will not effect your roll over minutes.

This may only happen if they get rid of the consumer-quality GPS receiver in it. Would raise the price of the handset, though.

It's more than likely going to be the use of their own software (iMaps?) rather than use Google which has their own Mobile OS now.

the GPS and the antenna in iPhone 4 certainly works well enough. Infact, it's better than my standalone TomTom. But I see your point... TomTom is one of the consumer-quality GPS.

Hey guys,

I originally bought an mbox mini and upgraded to Pro Tools 7.4.2.

In my account on digidesign (Avid Audio)'s website I can download various installer packages and the authorisation codes. However it only goes up to Tiger, and Leopard.

I was wondering , if I upgrade to Snow Leopard. . .does the 7.4.2 version of Pro Tools LE for Leopard run on SL?

I can imagine that Apple provides detailed specs to the manufacturers of the glass and that there is a bidding process involved. That means that any deviation from the provided specs after production will have to be corrected at the cost and time of the manufacturer, not Apple.

If this is actually the case, than the manufacturer can even be held accountable for the loss in sales.

More likely it was Apple's fault for specifying either a nearly unachievable spec or for giving a bad material specification.

I too am forced to use Lotus Notes at work. Maybe it hasn't been "implemented properly" in my office, but it is a horrible, awful thing. Even common commands are hidden deep inside nondescript menus and any attempt at customizing anything ends with frustration. I would hope that this bloated piece of software crap stays far, far away from the Mac platform forever.

And this is why HTML5 versions of these types of apps are coming. At which point it will become more clear that Apple did not really offer anything.
Apple does offer something for smaller companies for which a 30% for payment handling might actually be a good deal.

It has been suggested in a number of places that Apple simply underestimated the cost of free apps (to them) and is now trying to claw back revenue where it can (first by allowing in-app purchasing for free apps, something Jobs said would never happen: 'Free apps stay free', then via iAds, then via this subscription service) while at the same time providing a service to its customers (who do not have to enter their creditcard for every in-app purchase or subscription anymore).
The contention only started when Apple made in-App purchases and subscriptions exclusive to their method.

It's as if not a single person has taken a look at the FCP timeline for the last eight years. The last four releases have all been almost exactly two years apart from each other. FCS3 came out in 2009 and that means two years later in 2011 we will see the next iteration. You don't need a divining rod to figure out where the next version is. Pretty simple really.

As to edit systems, the beauty of the advancements that Apple, Adobe, Avid and to some extent Sony have made means that editors are no longer locked in to one system. I have premiere loaded on my system right alongside FCP. Because of the freelance nature of the business I think there are not as many "universal" truths about which app you need to use to cut your show. I would still estimate that there are many more FCP installs in use than Avid.

What difference does it being a phone make? If Mac OS was the most popular OS on laptops, would that make any difference? I guess it would be a cool talking point, but the fact would remain that Windows is still more popular overall.

Android having a larger percentage of phone penetration (versus OS penetration) is a similar figure. Cool talking point, maybe, but absolutely useless as an actual data point.

On the points that matter (OS penetration, individual device sales, developer revenue, available software), iOS is ahead.

I don't think that barmann was making a case against a new technology that didn't fit the old ways like when mice were first introduced.

Sounded like it to me. May not have been the gist, but unwittingly, he was making that argument.

His point was that as much as iPad fanboys want it to be the coolist thing ever that will replace all those old-fashioned computers there are differences in machines between consumer ones and those used by professionals.

This is the exact argument made against the mouse and GUI. Exact. Mouse and GUI-based machines were scoffed at by geeks back in the 80s as "toys." That's the same rhetoric I'm hearing now about the iPad and touch-based devices. "It won't do for real work done by professionals." "It's fun but I can't get things done on it." That may be true for some lines of work at this stage, but it's going to change fast so declaring it useless or a plaything at this stage is shortsighted.

And BTW, nobody is saying the iPad will replace computers. Just like the mouse and GUI, this approach is going to continue evolving until ways are found for it to enhance computers and become an essential part of it. But it's insane for people to write off touch-based tablets as fanboy cheerleading

i don't see why so many people think iChat on a phone is so crazy or why it would need to be wifi.

i have a button on my Razr that is a direct connection to AIM so instant messaging from a phone isn't crazy, two of the people on my buddy list are on mobile phones.

iChat would be faster then texting and just cause this "second phone" would be very iChat based doesn't mean it wont be a phone. It sounds very sidekick like and the sidekick of course has AIM on it.

If they make a phone that will beat the Sidekick (shouldn't be too hard) then i'm in, i'd prefer that then just a a regular candy bar phone

But that is the problem. Instant messaging has been on phones for over two years. Why would they want to sell a phone on instant messaging if everybody pretty much already has a phone with IM already? There's no reason to buy it if they're going to advertise a feature people already have it on their phones.

And how exactly is IM faster than texting?

Not once in the description does it say that is the picture you are getting. eBay allows the use of stock photos (which in most cases look nothing like what is actually being sold) for sellers to describe their item, obviously you are too remedial to realize that obvious fact as well. I have done this multiple times, all of which ended in success. eBay auctions are legally binding contracts with the description as the stipulations. I suggest you take a basic course in law or political philosophy and maybe you won't sound like such a jackass when you get proved wrong.

So one more question for you, if you are so sure I will lose, why don't you just buy it to prove a point to me? Don't you want me to lose money shipping it to you to make me learn a lesson? Don't you want to be able to leave negative feedback on my account at no cost to you (since you're sure you will get a refund and eBay will side with you)? Seems like a pretty good opportunity for you chap. Good luck. :)
